The 2018 Newbery Awards! On  February 9, 2018, the American Library Association (ALA) announced the 2018 winner of the John Newbery Medal Award.  This award is given “for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature.” This year’s winner was Hello Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly. It is considered a “modern quest tale”, using Filipino folklore and real life. The three Newbery Honor Books were also named. They are: Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut by Derrick Barnes written in lyrical free verse and Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds, which is also written in verse, but it is “terse and sharp.” The third Honor book is Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson. “Artful and poetic language” is used to describe Jade’s hardship and everyday living.The 2018 Coretta Scott King Book Award The Coretta Scott King Book Award is awarded to “an African-American author and illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults.” This year’s winner was Piecing Me Together. Coretta Scott King award for illustration goes to Euka Holmes for illustrating Out of Wonder by Kwame Alexander.  Holmes is a native of Roxbury, MA.
